How Do the Volvo XC40 and XC60 Compare?

As you may have guessed from the numbers in the names, the Volvo XC40 is smaller than the XC60 in both exterior and interior dimensions. Both seat five passengers and have a total height of 65.3 inches, but the Volvo XC60 is 10 inches longer and 8 inches wider than the Volvo XC40, which also has a shorter wheelbase than the XC60. The shorter wheelbase makes the XC40 capable of turning more tightly, but the Volvo XC60 feels smoother over bumps and on the highway.

This size difference shows in the cabin where the Volvo XC60 has advantages in legroom for both rows, 41.5 inches for the front and 38 inches for the rear, but the Volvo XC40 still provides plenty of space, 40.9 inches of front legroom and 36.1 inches of rear legroom. The Volvo XC60 is wider, so there's more hip and shoulder room for the two rows, while also having the larger cargo area and a greater max cargo capacity than the Volvo XC40, 63.3 cubic feet for the XC60 and 57.5 cubic feet for the XC40.

Performance and Efficiency

As we mentioned above, the Volvo XC40 is the nimbler and lighter of the two, but the Volvo XC60 does offer the more powerful engines. The Volvo XC40 offers two engines, which are:

  • A 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque that has front wheel drive and up to 36 MPG highway
  • Another 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque with all-wheel drive and up to 31 MPG highway

Compare that with the Volvo XC60 that has three engine options, which are:

  • The same 248-horsepower engine as the XC40 but with a choice between front and all-wheel drive and up to 28 MPG highway
  • A supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque while getting up to 27 MPG highway with all-wheel drive standard
  • A plug-in hybrid engine that combines that supercharged engine with an electric motor for a net horsepower of 400, 472 pound-feet of torque, and 59 MPGe combined with the option for electric-only driving.

Both the Volvo XC40 and Volvo XC60 have an eight-speed automatic transmission and the option for an Active Chassis that adjusts to your preferences so that you enjoy the sportiness, efficiency, or comfort you crave. But, only the Volvo XC60 offers an air suspension, which delivers an exceptional ride as well as a button to lower the rear when you're loading gear in the back.

The design and engineering of both Volvo two-rows SUVs are impeccable, and it's the features of each that completes the packages of the Volvo XC40 and XC60. These models share a variety of standard features, such as:

  • A 9-inch center display with touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • High Performance Audio System
  • Power driver's seat with memory function
  • Door handle illumination
  • Power operated tailgate

Again, those are standard in both the Volvo XC60 and XC40, but you can also add on a variety of other features, from a navigation system for the center display to heated seats to a hands-free power tailgate. The Volvo XC60 does go further with its standard and available features as it has aspects like 2-zone auto climate control and a panoramic sunroof standard, both options in the XC40, while offering features that the XC40 doesn’t, like:

  • Heated rear seats
  • Backrest massage front seats
  • Graphical head-up display
  • Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound

Each of these models prioritizes passenger safety, which shows as both earned Top Safety Pick awards from the IIHS. It all starts with the design, as both the Volvo XC40 and Volvo XC60 have safety cages in high-strength steel, Side Impact Protection Systems, an inflatable curtain, and automatic braking after a collision, but it continues with the brilliant driver-assist tech in each. Both these Volvo models offer:

  • Active Bending Lights
  • City Safety Collision Avoidance Technology
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Collision Mitigation Support, Rear
  • Lane Keeping Aid
  • Driver Alert Control
  • Run-off Road Mitigation

Trim Levels

Trim Levels

The Volvo XC40 and XC60 both give Brick, NJ car shoppers several trim levels to choose from for each of the powertrains. You must also consider that the Volvo XC40 has a more affordable starting price than the XC60, so even higher trim levels of the XC40 may cost less than the base XC60. The options for the Volvo XC40 are:

  • The T4 FWD models come in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription levels
  • The T5 AWD models also come in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription levels

With the Volvo XC60, Toms River car shoppers will choose between:

  • T5 FWD/AWD models with Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription levels
  • T6 AWD models in the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription levels
  • T8 eAWD models offer the Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription levels
